MUSHROOM SAFETY

Good day! Today we are talking about mushroom safety — with a particular awareness note on limits for Reishi mushroom — for dietary and therapeutic use.

Mushroom Uses and Basics

You may have noticed a growing popularity of mushrooms emerging for mushroom coffee, caffeine alternatives, superfood nutritional smoothie ingredients (including Vitamin D), and powdered or liquid products containing a variety of mushrooms for everything from brain health to immune function, for their anti-bacterial / anti-viral activity, support with cardiovascular benefits, to cancer prevention and/or recovery.

This comes with benefits and also safety considerations.

We consume mushrooms in our diets through vegetable sautés, soups, grilled or prepared as meat alternatives, but a growing application of mushrooms has expanded to include mushrooms therapeutically by drying and powdering into concentrated form. This dried form is added to supplemental products, to many great benefits.

Mushroom Safety

That said, with concentrated superfoods and plants used as herbal medicines, this concentration comes with a need for mindfulness to safety.

Why?

This is due to consuming these preparations at far greater amounts than when these foods contained water and expanded fibers in our meals.

A couple of therapeutically active components of mushrooms are highlighted in my latest YouTube channel video, pointing to what can make them useful medicinally — yet which must consider you, as the individual, with your own unique medical history and functional needs.

There are clinical considerations when selecting and consuming any food or plant “at concentrate” because of the enhanced functional activities within the body. Included in this are parameters for safe use, which may require sporadic or periodic use — rather than long term daily intake for certain varieties.

As with all medicinal plant use at concentrated therapeutic dosing, additional considerations include medication interactions and contraindications, including (but not limited to) Autoimmune conditions. This is because “immune support” such as from mushrooms can have more ‘immune stimulating’ effect — and in this situation, some conditions can worsen when there is overstimulation of an already over-stimulated function.

Reishi, in particular…

In this video, there is one particular mushroom for consideration — Reishias it relates to liver function health and safety. Reishi is commonly found in many (if not most) mushroom blends often taken daily — which requires breaks in dosing for safety. As you will see, I have come across this in my practice and it is something I actively discuss with those who seek my assistance to optimise healthy hormonal, metabolic, and immune function.

When It Comes To Therapeutics…

On dietary supplementation of any form: Complicated routines leads to scattered or disorganised intake, ineffective results, and sometimes undermining our goals with conflicting or imbalanced products — no matter the impressive marketing

As with all supplementation, in my practice we aim to be effective through strategic and methodical approach, with clean / verified plant sourcing and artisan extraction methods, customised to the individual — rather than a one-size-suits-all.

Ultimately, streamlining daily routines for simplicity and convenience supports effectiveness. No commercial/retail food industry sourcing means clean from pollutants, chemicals, or heavy metals.
